Having an office to work in for our student newspaper is great.
A quiet space to come and work on articles, conduct interviews, and have meetings.
I think everyone on our staff would have to agree that part of the culture of being on The Gatepost is the little nick nacks and inside jokes we get to decorate our office with.
Staff throughout the ages have left their mark in this office - some of the niche items come and go, but a lot is here to stay.
The pieces that have been here for years make up the history of all 90 volumes The Gatepost has published.
Though our additions couldn't possible compare to the early 2000's "Massive Dash" office pet fish, here is some of the items since I've been on staff.
Our favorite interview quotes
Pictured you will find some taped up quotes from employees of Framingham State University. Of course, with the many lovers of TikTok on staff, we couldn’t help, but take the time to appreciate the director of Alumni Relations’s fear of this newer social media platform.
It had also been an inside joke for a while for staff to blame any and all problems on the very facts that yes, FSU does not have a food truck - much to the dismay of our vice president of Enrollment and Student Development.
Iconic photographs
Pictured is last year’s SGA during a meeting, where a staffer just perfectly captured an almost “religious” moment of student governing at FSU. Many staff like to connect the photo to another on the wall of our advisor speaking at the University’s Ecumenical Center.
Our favorite staff quotes
Similar to that of interview quotes, we can’t help, but appreciate the moments when staff say just the right things to describe the overall consensus of our team. Pictured is a quote about how addicted our staff are to doing journalism in order to get our paper out every week. Below is a quote from one of our news editors describing the very real anguish of trying to use the University’s Wi-Fi.
Also pictured is a screenshot of an email from a Gatepost alum, who unfortunately had to miss class due to falling off of his bike and breaking his elbow. This took place my freshman year when it seemed like the entire staff was falling apart - a broken elbow, another with a broken foot, and multiple out due to illness.
Memes of the week
Starting this year, a little blue sticky note has made its way all over the office marking items as our “Meme of the Week.” Just recently, as pictured, a manger quoted a popular TikTok - rephrasing it to address the woes of finding out how low our budget really is this year.
Aftermath of events
The Gatepost will host events throughout the year, including our ice cream social, our Halloween costume contest, and hot chocolate social. Some of the recent additions from this year’s Halloween includes a replica of the letter from Blue Clues after myself and another staff member both came dressed as the show’s former host, Steve. Also pictured is Timothée Chalamet’s “Tiny Horse” as one of our staff came dressed as him from an SNL special. Lastly, is some Lois Lane and Clark Kent press passes from our news team, who dressed up as the duo - with Kent/Superman winning first place this year.
My own additions
I could not possibly go without leaving some form of mark that future staff might deem as permanent, including a stuffed moose named Oxford (as The Gatepost is a big proponent of the oxford comma) sporting a white T-shirt with a Gatepost sticker as well as a signed note next to an alums under a piece of carpet that for some reason lifts up.
